September 9th: Listening Horse & The NM State Fair!

On Friday, September 9th, participants from Listening Horse will be showing off their riding skills with other therapeutic riding programs. Between 9am-12pm, they’ll be riding in a show with their peers, practicing their horsemanship and earning ribbons.

We’ll be taking 3 horses, all their tack, etc. and could use some help! We’ll be grooming, saddling, tending to the horses and riders as needed and helping the fair organizer as needed. Unloading when back in Santa Fe is the final task. It’s a fun day!

We’ll be meeting at the arena at 6am and can caravan to Albuquerque. Each person needs a ticket, which is $7.00 when purchased in advance. Listening Horse will purchase the tickets for each person who wants to join us and if reimbursing the program is a hardship, we’ll cover your cost.

Please let me know by Monday, September 5th if you’d like to help out.
Feel free to email with any questions.

Endurance Ride 2016 Fundraiser Success!

The endurance ride fundraiser was a success! We raised enough money to buy feed for the therapy horses for a good while to come. It wouldn’t have been possible to pull off the event without the incredible support and help from so many Listening Horse volunteers and folks from the community. People worked tirelessly to mark trails, prepare food, vet the endurance horses and a million other tasks. Thank you to everyone who offered their time and expertise to support this event and Listening Horse!

4th Annual AERC 2-Day Endurance Ride FUNDRAISER!

Hello!

Listening Horse Therapeutic Riding is pleased to be hosting its 4th Annual AERC 2-Day Endurance Ride FUNDRAISER! It will be held June 11 + 12th here in the beautiful Caja del Rio portion of the Santa Fe National Forest.  Please consider being part of this event — come & ride 50, 30 or 12 miles or volunteer to lend a hand over the weekend. All sorts of planning (and clean-up) help is also needed to make this event a success.

Attached is the flyer for the Endurance Ride. PLEASE share it with friends, post it on Facebook, e-mail it to anyone who might be interested, & post it inside businesses with information boards. If you’d like me to send you printed flyers, I’d be happy to put them in the mail. The website for the event is also up & running & includes lots of information about the ride.

Your support is greatly appreciated. All proceeds from the Endurance Ride help Listening Horse continue to provide equine-assisted therapy to our community at no charge.

Please let me know if you’d like to volunteer or have any questions regarding this event.

With gratitude,

Honoring Veterans in Tulsa: NSBA Heroes on Horses

Listening Horse was proud to participate in the NSBA Foundation’s Heroes on Horses Competition last month. The NSBA Foundation introduced the  Heroes On Horses competition in 2010 to honor disabled veterans who partner with horses in their healing process. The concept of the Heroes On Horses competition was started with a phone call from Gus Jolley, from Albuquerque, NM who ran a program for Disabled veterans with PTSD.

Gus Jolley

Our own Gus Jolley, his service dog, Otie, and horse Zorro, participated in the competition this year!

On August 17, 2014, 21 disabled veterans competed in two Heroes On Horses classes offered as part of the NSBA World Championship Show.  One class was offered for the working, ranch type horses, and one for Western Pleasure type horses.  Veterans from as far away as Florida joined the competition.  Veterans who  served in Iraq, Iraqi Freedom, Desert Storm /Desert Shield,  Vietnam, and literally all over the world, in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard competed in these classes.

564

Because many of the veterans and their horses had never been to a horse show before coming to compete in the NSBA Heroes On Horses classes, a short coaching session was held this year on  the evening before the competition.  Our veterans have made many sacrifices and have endured physical as well as emotional wounds. It is an honor for the NSBA Foundation and Listening Horse to be able to provide this experience for them!

Thank you to all who made these special moments possible.

AERC Endurance Ride: April 27th in Caja del Rio

Some fun is on the way! Listening Horse is sponsoring an endurance ride at the end of April.  Come ride the Caja del Rio with us, competing in an AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference)-sanctioned endurance ride: 50-mile endurance, 30-mile long distance, and 7.7-mile fun ride Saturday, April 27th, 2013.

Haul in on Friday, ride Saturday, and haul home on Sunday.  There will be plenty of water for our horses, and well-marked trails with good footing.  Riders will enjoy scenic vistas of the Rio Grande Valley, Los Alamos and the Pajarito Plateau.
